Needs
Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a life-threatening autoimmune disease that can develop at any age. It requires constant, complex management to survive, including multiple daily injections or insulin pump therapy and continuous blood glucose monitoring.
More than 1.5 million Americans live with T1D, including nearly 300,000 children.
T1D impacts far more than physical health. Research shows that individuals with T1D are at significantly higher risk for depression, anxiety, and eating disorders, with adolescents and girls especially vulnerable. In communities already facing systemic inequities, these risks are further intensified by social, economic, and geographic barriers that limit access to specialized care and culturally relevant resources.
Despite rising diagnosis rates and the significant physical and emotional burden of T1D, comprehensive support for children and families remains deeply inadequate.
Far too often, families are left to manage this complex and demanding disease on their own.
Breakthrough T1Dβs outreach programming fills this critical gap by providing free and accessible T1D education and support. Designed to meet both the medical and psychosocial needs of youth and caregivers, our programming empowers families with the tools, knowledge, and community they need not just to manage T1D, but to thrive in spite of it.
