APAPA

The Asian Pacific Islander American Public Affairs Association (APAPA) is a non-profit, non-partisan, and grassroots organization founded in 2001 by C.C. Yin and a pioneering group of fellow civic-minded friends and community leaders. APAPA was established with the primary mission of empowering Asian Pacific Islander (API) Americans in civic and public affairs through education, active participation, and leadership development. To accomplish this objective, APAPA developed voter registration events, internships, scholarships, voter education forums, and leadership, mentoring, and networking programs designed specifically for the education, betterment, and advancement of the API community. We have a diverse membership representing all communities and proud to have thirty (and growing) chapters throughout the nation.

Mission

To empower Asian and Pacific Islander (API) Americans through education, leadership, and active participation in civic and public affairs.

Needs

Capital Internship Program: Empower youths (cultural and ethnically diverse college students from low/moderate-income families) with stipends for internships with public officials. In addition to learning about local government and civic engagement and how it impacts communities, students in the program attend workshops such as finance, digital literacy, interview techniques, etc., to develop skillsets needed to be workforce ready.

Youth Leadership Academy: Provides high school students with a foundation to become great leaders. With guidance from our large network of professionals in business and politics, our high school leadership team leads programs for them and their peers. They provide workshops, panel discussions and training sessions on career guidance, communication and social skills, civic engagement awareness and leadership development.

Voters Education and Candidates Forum: Presents pertinent civic issues and candidate panels to raise awareness and increase participation in the democratic process. It's a forum that engages candidates, public officials, community leaders, the general public, and media outlets to bring attention to issues and the need for voting.

Women Leadership Conference: An all-day event to empower API women in leadership and civic engagement, through speakers and panel discussions.

Unrestricted Funding: Financial support that is critical to APAPA's sustainability and growth. The organization operates on a tight budget with minimal staff, depending mostly on event sponsors. With COVID-19, we reimagined our events and turned them virtual. We need equipment from lighting, to computers and broadcasting software so that we can develop an in-house technical team that will allow us to broadcast our programs and events online.
