Iceland was opened in 1940 and is currently celebrating its 83rd anniversary. Iceland is located in the heart of Del Paso Heights, which is one of Sacramento's poorest and underserved communities. The ice rink was almost completely destroyed in 2010 due to a fire caused by arson. The ice-skating rink re-opened later that year with the efforts of over 800 volunteers who contributed more than 20,000 hours to restore the main functions of the rink. The roof was not restored.
Iceland was not able to open for our 2020-21 or 2021-22 season because of the COVID-19 pandemic related issues. We didn't open for the 2022-23 & 2023-24 season because of the planning and work related to our effort to restore the roof. In November 2023, the City of Sacramento approved the remaining funding needed to complete the reconstruction of Iceland. This included a $1.3M forgivable loan from the city for the construction and a loan for $125K to restore the historic Iceland facade.
Iceland reformed as a non-profit 501(c)(3) in November 2011. Iceland has been open only during the winter season serving more than 20,000 skaters, most of who live in the community. With a new roof structure, the rink will operate year-round and serve the community at full capacity. Iceland is one of the only family-friendly recreational facilities in the North Sacramento/Del Paso Heights. Del Paso Heights qualifies as a redevelopment zone and consists of over 85% low-income (below the poverty line) families.
We promote, advance, and sponsor ice sports, primarily figure and hockey skating on a recreational basis, by providing lessons and ice rink facilities. We operate in one of the most socioeconomically disadvantaged communities in Sacramento. We focus on programs for youth, including disabled and disadvantaged children, by offering our community a safe, family-friendly environment, free of adverse influences common in a community such as ours.
Sponsoring lessons for disadvantaged youth is another priority. Cost is $60 per child for 4 weekly 1/2-hour lesson plus practice time. We could do 100 youth per month for a cost of $6,000 for 11 months of the year for a total cost of $66,000.
Many of our rental skates require replacement, new skates are much stiffer which enable beginning skaters to learn to skate more easily. The total cost of our program request is $15,000. This amount will cover purchase and delivery of 200 pairs of skates.
We would like to purchase special sleds and hockey equipment for use by disabled youth who would like to play sled hockey. Cost is for each is $2,000. We would need at least 12 to field 2 teams for a total cost of $24,000.
We need $200K to purchase many furnishings. We need new bleachers, new rubber, and new bathrooms.
We need volunteers to help with grant writing, fundraising, and social media.
We need additional business focused board members. We are especially in need of board members with fund raising experience.
