Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sacramento was incorporated in 1985, and has been operating as an independent 501c3 organization for 32 years. During the first 18 years of operation, Sacramento Habitat built an average of 2 homes annually. In 2004 the board of directors made the decision to ramp up production, resulting in the completion of 68 homes during the period 2004 through 2014. Today, since our incorporation in 1985, Sacramento Habitat has completed 142 homes for qualified low and very low income local families. Habitat Greater Sacramento also recently piloted a new program devoted to home repairs to help low-income families, elderly, and Veterans stay in their homes.
According to the last census in 2010, there are over 36,000 low income families in Sacramento County living in substandard or overcrowded conditions, or paying more than 50% of their income on housing expenses. Making sure that these families have access to a safe, decent, affordable place to call home is the need that Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sacramento addresses in our Sacramento and Yolo communities. Our 5 biggest needs are as follows: Funding (All of our funding is raised locally from individuals, corporations,and foundations. As Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sacramento is completely locally and non-governmentally supported organization (meaning does not receive funding from Habitat International nor do we receive any state or local government support) every new home builds requires $150,000 in home sponsorship seed money to bring it from foundation to finish and home repair projects for elderly, disabled, and Veterans can range from $5,000-$60,000 a project), Volunteers (every year, we utilize over 2,500 local volunteers to help build and repair Habitat homes), In-Kind Materials and Trade Partners (We are always looking for donated materials for both construction and our ReStore, as well as donated professional labor), Advocacy, and ReStore donors and shoppers.

The needs are great, but we believe it takes a community to build a community and through the support of the Sacramento and Yolo Community, we can not only build a better community, but change lives.
Our top needs:
  1. Funding: Unrestricted - Unrestricted funding is needed to help fund the purchase of tools and safety equipment for the construction sites, as well as supervision costs for the projects.
  2. Funding: Program - Every new home builds requires $150,000 in home sponsorship seed money to bring it from foundation to finish and home repair projects for elderly, disabled, and Veterans can range from $5,000-$60,000 a project. Program funding goes directly into the project it is solicited for.
  3. In-Kind Donations - We are always in need of in-kind donations for our ReStore (our "Home Depot meets Goodwill" type home goods retail warehouse which sells donated new and used materials to raise money for our mission), as well as in-kind donations to use for our new home build and critical repair projects.
  4. Technology - We could greatly benefit from an improvement in our technology department including donations of new computers, mac laptops, tablets, a projector, and a new quality camera. As well as technology grants to finance upgrades to our database and allow us to access media monitoring tools, grant search engines, and website updates.
  5. Volunteers - We utilize over 2,500 volunteers a year and are always looking for volunteers to help with construction, in the ReStore, and as part of special events.
