American River Parkway Foundation

The American River Parkway Foundation is a convener focused on the conservation of the American River Parkway and the development of the Parkway into one of the nation’s premier urban natural parks. In 2023, the Parkway Foundation celebrated 40 years of engaging volunteers and enhancing the visitor experience.   The Parkway Foundation continues to engage the public with our clean-ups, invasive plant removal, and improving access to the Parkway for the greater Sacramento community.   

At 4,800 acres, the Parkway is the largest urban park in the nation, six times larger than Central Park in New York City and four times larger than Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.  

Over the past year, the Parkway Foundation has made strides through outreach to our communities, new immigrants, and families to share the resources available to them along the Parkway.  

Highlights in 2023 for the Foundation include:

• More than 99,529 pounds of trash were removed, and 30.5 miles of the Parkway were cleared.
• Worked with Sacramento Regional Transit to add The American River Parkway to their maps. 
• More than 115,052 invasive plants were removed.
• Installed new directional signs onto the Parkway so new and old visitors know where they are along the Parkway.  
• Construction of 15 picnic tables and the repainting of 50 others. 
• Created brochures in multiple languages, including Ukrainian, Fashi, and Spanish, to improve Knowledge of the Parkway's meant resources. 
• Thousands of volunteers contributed over 17,599 volunteer hours.
