Potential is equally distributed across lines of race and class, but in America today, opportunity is not. Although we look to education to help children overcome obstacles like systemic racism and poverty, our school system was not designed for today's children who count on school to access opportunity. While there has been tremendous progress in education, there is more work to be done to ensure every student has the opportunity for an excellent education that prepares them to shape the world for themselves and all of us. But people designed this system, and so people can re-imagine and rebuild it.

At Teach For America, we have set a 10-year goal. By 2030, twice as many students in the communities where we work will reach key educational milestones indicating they are on a path to economic mobility and co-creating a future filled with possibility.
In pursuit of this goal, the Teach For America network, in partnership with our communities and alongside our students, is working to move the boundaries of what is possible in education. Our network includes educators, school and district leaders, school board members, legislators, entrepreneurs, community organizers, professors, lawyers, civic leaders and more - united by their belief in the potential of all children.

Teach For America leaders are working with thousands of students from Sacramento to Stockton to the Central Valley every day. Students are driven to lead the future of their classrooms, schools, and community. Every day we are focused on ensuring they have the opportunity to learn the necessary knowledge and skills, are growing in their unique leadership potential, and can access opportunities that mark the path of economic mobility so that they are able to learn, lead, and thrive.

Teach For America - California Capital Valley (TFA-CCV) launched in Sacramento in 2012. Today we are a diverse and talented network of more than 550 leaders committed to educational equity and excellence.

Mission

At Teach For America, our vision is that one day all children in this nation will have the opportunity to attain an excellent education.

We find, develop, and support equity-oriented leaders - individually and in teams - so they can transform education and expand opportunity with children, starting in the classroom.

Needs

With support from passionate and generous donors, we are able to: (1) grow diverse talent and systems leadership; (2) inspire fierce advocates for educational equity; and (3) prepare students to learn, lead and thrive.

- We are committed to growing the number of leaders in education who are focused on systems change. Our work for the next 10 years will require us to face challenges that are continuously evolving and provide opportunities for students so they can realize a future filled with possibility. We will need a diverse and committed coalition of effective leaders to succeed in this work.

- We are focused on inspiring champions across our communities to actively advocate for making educational equity and excellence a reality for all students. We need to create alliances that includes our alumni, corps members, staff, donors, civic and business leaders, community leaders as well as our students, their parents and families.

- We believe that students have the power to transform their own futures, when we support them to develop into leaders. To do this, their needs must be elevated so they can exceed milestones that put them on a path to economic mobility. We are working to provide the foundation of knowledge and skills students need and give them access to opportunities that will enable them to shape the future of their communities and allow them to lead the way to create a better world.

Teach For America -California Capital Valley will make new investments, in an effort to accelerate

progress to our 10-year goal, by launching an alumni forward strategy. The California Capital Valley will lead efforts to design and pilot alumni programming and initiatives that expand our impact and footprint in more communities. The aim is for our alumni to be driving meaningful change so that by 2030, twice as many children in communities where we work will reach key educational milestones indicating they are on a path to economic mobility and co-creating a future filled with possibility.

Teach For America - California Capital Valley has made a commitment high need schools where the majority of students are growing up in low-income households. Many Teach For America leaders are working as full-time, fully certified teachers. TFA educators often find that the school supplies and other resources offered by their schools or that their students are able to secure themselves is not adequate to do the job sufficiently. In the current moment, we have also witnessed that technology and the need for new resources play a critical role in education. All students should have access to the right tools to help them learn. We welcome in-kind donations to help local classrooms in our highest need communities have the materials they need to provide an excellent education experience for all students.

Teach For America - California Capital Valley is aiming to grow our regional advisory board from 6 members up to 12-15 members. We are seeking community members who are passionate about transforming public education, believe deeply in the power of leaders to drive systems-level change, and who want to be part of a growing and diverse coalition advocating for educational equity and excellence. (Our board fulfills an important strategic advisory role and does not have fiduciary responsibilities.)

The educational challenges our country faces are deeply rooted. Solving them will take many interventions from many directions over a prolonged period of time. Change requires leaders both inside and outside of the system, working to challenge the status quo and demonstrate what's possible. A broad and diverse coalition of people united around common purpose and shared values will help bring about positive impact towards education equity. Our volunteer program will match people with alumni. corps members and/or staff to provide them support, leveraging volunteers' unique skillsets. As a volunteer, you'll have the chance to work on projects in line with Teach For America's commitment to equity and excellence in education.

Equity Statement

Unequal access to opportunity along lines of race, class, and other aspects of identity has deep roots in American history, and institutional racism and classism contribute to inequitable access to educational opportunity in our country today. Therefore, understanding race, class, and the intersectional nature of oppression along these and other lines is critical to eliminating educational inequity and creating an education system in which all students can flourish. Realizing educational equity and excellence will take a broad and diverse coalition of people—of diverse races, ethnicities, socioeconomic statuses, genders, sexual orientations, abilities, political views, and other aspects of identity and spheres of influence—united around a common purpose and shared values. We know that the change effort must be shaped by those of us who are most directly impacted by educational inequity. We also know that progress is only possible if each of us works effectively across lines of difference—with students, parents, partners, and each other—and if each of us understands and leverages the assets we bring to this work based on our identities and life experiences. This understanding guides our strategy as we pursue our mission, and impacts how we allocate resources to recruit, select, train, support, retain, and engage corps members, alumni, and staff. In all we do, we act on the following beliefs:

(1) Diversity is crucial for successful change efforts and is one of Teach For America’s greatest strengths.

(2) The full potential of our diverse network will be reached only when we are an inclusive community.

(3) The predictability of success or failure for our students or individuals in our organization should not correlate with any social, cultural or other identity-based factors.
