SABA was founded in 1991 and incorporated as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization in 2002. Currently, the organization is staffed by an executive director, and three part-time senior staff who provide support services and act as program managers. We also employ several part-time employees who staff our bike valet and bike mechanic events. We serve communities across the six-county region of the Sacramento Area Council of Governments, with deep roots in Rancho Cordova. We have expanded services in South Sacramento and other neighborhoods outside of the Sacramento Grid.

We carry out our mission in three ways:
- We participate as an engaged stakeholder and advocate for people traveling by bike in public works projects and private development to ensure that residents can comfortably choose bicycling as a convenient means of travel. This work involves testifying before legislative and regulatory bodies as needed and partnering with public agencies and private interests on projects that improve bicycle access and safety.
- We educate and support riders of all ages and socio-economic levels, so that they feel more comfortable in choosing to ride their bike. Our goal is twofold: healthier community members and cleaner air for everyone.
- We encourage bicycling by engaging and inspiring community members directly through social media, website content, social rides, and bike parking services at community events.

Mission

SABA works to improve the health and quality of life for residents of the greater Sacramento area by promoting bicycling for transportation and by promoting safe bicycle trips through education, community service, and other activities. We envision a region where our streets and roads are accessible by all residents and that they feel empowered to choose bicycling as their primary form of transportation for work or play.

Needs

1. Ride Ready Repair: Our Ride Ready Repair program serviced over 1500 bicycles in 2023, and in 2024 we are launching an internship program in partnership with Community Shop Class on Stockton Blvd. to teach young adults the basics of bike repair and e-bike retrofits. The ultimate goal is to launch a bike collective on Stockton Blvd. that will support residents who live in the adjacent neighborhoods. This program is growing, and additional funds will take care of disposable items - tubes, tires, chains, cables etc. We also want to secure a set of tools purchased for the co-hort who complete the program.

2. BikeMatch: We launched our BikeMatch program in 2020 during the pandemic and it has steadily grown. This program matches donated bikes to people who need a bike. To date, we've matched over 200 people who needed a bicycle with one donated by someone who had one to give. Each bicycle is refurbished, and the new owner is provided a set of lights, a helmet and a lock for safety. We need funding to move this project into a year-round program.

3. Portable bikelane sweeper: the City of Sacramento has two small street sweepers that can fit within the protected bikelanes in the central city. These sweepers do not pick up all of the debris in our bikelanes on a regular basis due to the low frequency of sweeping scheduled by public works. A new creation; a portable bikelane sweeper that is hauled by bicycle will take care of the hazards of debris in our bikelanes. We would like to purchase two of these sweepers for sue to help keep Midtown's bikelanes clean.

4. Bike education classes: We get asked weekly if we had bicycle education classes to teach adults how to ride a bike. With more young people ditching their cars and wanting to use a bicycle for daily transportation, we would like them to learn how to ride and so they can navigate our streets with confidence. We would like to launch our bike education curriculum, but need resources to pay for our instructors.

SABA is a non-profit organization dedicated to making our region a safer, healthier, and friendlier place to ride a bike, whether for commuting, recreation, or exercise, for all people, regardless of race, income, or ability.

We stand committed to fostering safe and accessible streets for biking and other modes of active transportation in Sacramento area neighborhoods that, as a result of historically unsustainable and inequitable land use decisions, are disproportionately burdened by poor air quality, public health impacts, and the highest rates of traffic injuries and fatalities.

SABA will work to promote diverse and inclusive participation in local transportation decision making by raising the voices of residents of historically marginalized communities and communities of color. With your help, we can advocate for an equitable transportation system to address public and environmental health disparities and promote healthy, sustainable communities for all.
