Institute for Local Government

The Institute for Local Government was created by the League of California Cities in 1955 to conduct research and information that cities could use to improve local services and solve problems. As the needs of local governments have evolved throughout the years, so has the Institute, which now serves more than 2,000 local agencies including those affiliated with California State Association of Counties and the California Special Districts Association. ILG offers a variety of trainings and research on topics ranging from ethics and transparency, to public engagement and climate action and adaptation. The Institute has developed a variety of treasured resources including the Stretching Community Dollars Guidebook, the Good Governance Checklist and the Sustainability Best Practices Framework. In addition, ILG provides customized trainings for local elected officials and staff on the basics of community planning, immigrant integration and collaboration and partnerships. While the Institute has reached much success in our over 60 year history, we know there is always a need to support good local leadership and build the next generation of leaders of California.

Mission

The Institute for Local Government promotes good government at the local level with practical, impartial and easy-to-use resources for California communities. The Institute's goal is to assist local leaders to govern openly, effectively and ethically, work collaboratively and foster healthy and sustainable communities.

Needs

The Institute for Local Government is seeking unrestricted funding from those who believe that good government starts with well-informed leaders with access to trusted and impartial resources, and that supporting good government at the local level is an investment in California's future. This funding will allow us the flexibility to enhance existing program offerings and develop new initiatives that address the ever-changing needs of local officials and the communities they serve.

This funding would directly support one of our five programs: Ethics and Transparency, Collaboration and Partnerships, Public Engagement, Local Government Basics and Sustainable Communities.

Volunteers could be used as meeting/convening facilitators and/or trainers.

Could include use of space/venues, subscriptions to software, video, survey or graphic design assistance.

Hardware or software for general office use.
