Launched in 2015, Capital Dance Project (CDP) is an independent collective of professional dancers with a mission to uplift the spirit of the Sacramento community through innovative, collaborative, and inclusive performing arts experiences. CDP fulfills its mission by providing a platform for its resident choreographers to create world premiere works in collaboration with local visual artists and musicians, and by making dance accessible to everyone through community outreach and engagement. CDP represents the fulfillment of its founding members' shared dream to create a uniquely dancer-run company, providing employment for professional dancers and choreographers, as well as the opportunity to develop skillsets in all areas of running the project beyond the stage.

As an entirely dancer run organization, every part of the process, from choreographing the ballets to marketing the performances to producing the festival is led by the dancers themselves. This gives them a unique opportunity to explore new ideas, exercise their entrepreneurial spirit, and expand their creativity by taking part in every aspect of the work. They are able to help shape the direction of the company, build new skills, and take full ownership of bringing their artistic vision to life in service of both the work and the community.

CDP is proud to be fiscally sponsored by Friends of Sacramento Arts.

Mission

Capital Dance Project (CDP) is an independent collective of professional dancers with a mission to uplift the spirit of the Sacramento community through inclusive, innovative, and collaborative performing arts experiences.

Needs

CDP seeks funding to support production costs for our annual Behind the Barre festival September 4th and 5th at the Red Museum. This immersive performance series transforms a nontraditional venue into a vibrant creative space, featuring original works by local dancers, choreographers, musicians, and artists. By utilizing and uplifting Sacramento’s unique cultural infrastructure, Behind the Barre contributes to the city’s creative economy while making innovative performance experiences more accessible to our community.

CDP is committed to providing income for local artists. CDP aims to raise funds to continue to support local dancers and artists and help them share their talents and vision with their community.

CDP seeks funding to continue its Behind the Barre outreach efforts to make dance accessible to everyone in the Sacramento community. CDP will once again partner with the Boys and Girls Club of Greater Sacramento to bring live dance demonstrations to the students. In addition, CDP will provide free tickets to the Behind the Barre performances for all participating students and their families.

CDP seeks in-kind donations including advertisements in print, television, radio, and on social media.

CDP's wardrobe department consists of CDP's own dancers who are passionate about pursuing costume design. Over the last ten years, these talented artists have created over 350 costumes for Behind the Barre performances. CDP seeks funding to cover fabric, supplies, and labor costs.

Equity Statement

At Capital Dance Project, our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility is fundamental to who we are as an artist-led organization. We acknowledge that systemic inequities and cultural biases continue to shape access to the arts, particularly for communities of color, and we are dedicated to actively addressing those barriers within our work and our community.

We strive to build and sustain practices that are equitable and responsive, regularly examining how traditional structures in the performing arts may exclude or disadvantage marginalized communities. As a dancer-run collective, we view this as an ongoing responsibility, remaining open to learning, reflection, and change as we grow.

Through our performances, outreach programs, and collaborative projects, we aim to create welcoming and accessible experiences with minimal barriers to participation. We prioritize inclusivity in both our creative process and audience engagement, ensuring that a wide range of voices and perspectives are represented and valued.

We are committed to fostering an environment where individuals of all ages, races, ethnicities, cultural backgrounds, abilities, gender identities, and sexual orientations feel seen, respected, and invited to engage with the arts. We believe that a more inclusive and equitable artistic space strengthens not only our organization, but the broader community we serve.
