In May 1986, the Board of Directors of Capital Public Radio appointed members to an Endowment Committee. The Endowment Committee filed for nonprofit incorporation status with the IRS in 1987 and became Capital Public Radio Endowment, a separate 501(c)(3) charitable organization for the sole purpose of supporting Capital Public Radio. Today, Capital Public Radio Endowment, aka the CapRadio Endowment, has approximately $1.7M in a fund that is managed by Morgan Stanley. Investment policies are reviewed annually and strategies are developed to support specific projects and grow the fund to support Capital Public Radio long term. Currently, CapRadio Endowment is supporting the Food and Sustainability initiative or CapRadio Garden Project and is engaged in growing the funding for this and other projects.
Capital Public Radio Endowment was created in 1986 for the specific and primary purpose of creating sustainable and long term support for Capital Public Radio. Capital Public Radio is embracing new ways of keeping our citizens informed and in touch with each other.
Our top needs:
  1. Funding: Unrestricted - Capital Public Radio strives to be a strong voice throughout the region and must be sustained. Funds donated to Capital Public Radio Endowment are primarily through the donors to Capital Public Radio who wish to support its long term sustainability.
  2. Funding: Unrestricted - When new ideas and opportunities arise, we want to be able to respond thoughtfully yet swiftly. Not only can the CapRadio Endowment provide capital from investment income, it can attract support from those interested in further advancing our mission.
  3. Funding: Unrestricted - The CapRadio Endowment can help CapRadio expand its news desk to include additional beats on immigration, business, education, and innovation. Each position requires a full-time specialized reporter, along with editing and digital support staff.
  4. Funding: Unrestricted - To provide additional support to the Reno/Tahoe area, served by our KKTO station 90.5FM.
  5. Funding: Unrestricted - To provide additional support to the Stockton/Modesto area, served by our KUOP station 91.3FM.
The CapRadio Endowment operates in a virtuous cycle with Capital Public Radio. The social capital built from relationships and shared trust attracts financial capital. In a form of philanthropic alchemy, the financial capital is reinvested back into Capital Public Radio to build social capital in our communities, in turn generating more financial capital and the cycle goes on. Because we want Capital Public Radio to always be a vibrant force in our community, we are asking our listeners and community to: - Be a steward of this irreplaceable treasure - Help create a permanent, sustainable funding source - Participate in maintaining vital programs and creating new ones - Use investments in our endowment to bolster annual contribution's to Capital Public Radio's operating budget And because annual giving is not enough: - Annual fund drives only provide funds for ongoing operations - Endowment funding can provide support for special projects, e.g. The Garden Project; adding a new station - Endowment funding can provide an annual stream of permanent support - As the value of the endowment increases, income transferable to the operating budget increases Help us ensure a sound future by supporting the Capital Public Radio Endowment today.
