Sacramento Shakespeare Festival

The Sacramento Shakespeare Festival brings Shakespeare to life in Sacramento, by Sacramento, and for Sacramento. We believe that watching and understanding Shakespeare makes people's lives better. We believe that making Shakespeare accessible to everyone in Sacramento makes Sacramento better.

We have been producing Shakespeare in William Land Park for 31 years. Our program is based in the Department of Theatre Arts and Film at Sacramento City College, a cultural center of a thriving arts community, and we perform in William Land Park, in the geographical center of the city. Our sets and costumes are built at the college, using materials from the nearest building supply and fabric stores. We use local vendors for all our technical, service, and merchandise needs.

The festival is created by local directors and designers, from our college, and from other local colleges and high schools; it is performed by local theatre artists, including students from the college; and it is supported by local businesses. Our High School Interns come from many High Schools in the Sacramento area.

Our performances are intended to be comfortable for and accessible to local audiences. We strive continually to make the seating more comfortable, and to mitigate the heat with fans or the cold with blankets and hot chocolate. We reach out to schools, community centers, parks, other festivals, Gold Rush Days, the Tudor Fayre, and FairyTale Town, in an effort to bring Shakespeare to those who may not be able to come to Land Park. We produce Staged Readings of less performed plays, a Comedy Reading Marathon, actors in costume at Second Saturday, and A Peek Under the Tent to show how we produce some of the magic. Many Sacramentans travel out of town for their Shakespeare, and we would like to provide it for them right here.
We are looking to expand our advisory board to better reflect the needs and to better access the resources of the community. We would like to expand our donor and sponsorship base. And we are looking for relationships with companies that might help to provide us materials and other in-kind services. We would like to develop a volunteer organization. We can always use vintage costumes and props.
Our top needs:
  1. Board Members - We would like to expand our advisory board to include more members from the community.
  2. Funding: Unrestricted - We would like to develop a more efficient program to find and keep donors.
  3. In-Kind Donations - We would like to reach out more often to companies that might want to work with us to provide materials and services in-kind.
  4. Volunteers - We would like to develop a volunteer organization to help us with ushering.
  5. Other - Please Describe - We can always use vintage costumes and props.
I have been Festival Director for the last nineteen years, I have seen us go though many changes, and I am so very proud of what we have accomplished in bringing Shakespeare to Sacramento year after year. I am thrilled that we can offer yet another season of Shakespeare in the Park. This will be our 32nd year in William Land Park, and our 52nd year doing Shakespeare in the summer. We have also grown our outreach programs and our High School Internship Program, and we are reaching thousands every year. Thank you for helping us!
