Why is Big Day of Giving (BDOG) good for the Sacramento region?

The nonprofit sector is the heart and soul of the Sacramento region. Nonprofits enrich our community in immeasurable ways, and Big Day of Giving is a unique opportunity for the public to learn about their work and how they contribute to our community.

Since 2013, our region has shown tremendous support for more than 600 organizations that have participated in Big Day of Giving, by generating over $30 million in six giving days—and on May 2, 2019, our community will rally to show its generous spirit once again!

Where does Big Day of Giving take place?

Big Day of Giving is an online event from 12 a.m. to 11:59 p.m. on May 2, 2019: during that time, gifts are made at www.bigdayofgiving.org and news and updates are regularly posted to BDOG social media sites. Though the main action is online, many participating organizations hold events throughout the day to celebrate Big Day of Giving. We will list those events on the website as BDOG nears.

What nonprofits are eligible to participate in Big Day of Giving?

Only 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations that have met the eligibility and registration requirements may participate in Big Day of Giving. The registration process begins eight months prior to Big Day of Giving, and participating nonprofits are invited to attend dozens of trainings, workshops, and webinars to prepare them for success on Big Day of Giving each year.

Who makes Big Day of Giving possible?

The generosity of donors in the Sacramento region make Big Day of Giving a success every year!

Since 2013, the Sacramento Region Community Foundation has coordinated Big Day of Giving and the nonprofit knowledgebase that powers it, GivingEdge. The Foundation brings both to the capital area as part of its Strategic Initiative to expand charitable giving in our community and to strengthen our local nonprofit sector.

Who can donate to a nonprofit on Big Day of Giving?

Donors can be individuals or corporations/businesses. Nonprofit organizations are prohibited from donating to themselves on Big Day of Giving.

How do I donate to a nonprofit on Big Day of Giving?

You can donate to participating nonprofits during Big Day of Giving on Thursday, May 2, 2019, at www.bigdayofgiving.org. The minimum gift is $15, and MasterCard, Visa, Discover and American Express credit and debit cards are accepted forms of payment.

Each gift you make is 100% tax-deductible and irrevocable, and all donations will be granted for unrestricted use.

Keep in mind that, following Big Day of Giving, the charge on your debit or credit card statement will read “BIGDAYOFGIVING,” rather than the specific organization(s) to which you donated.

How do I schedule a gift in advance of Big Day of Giving?

Starting Monday, April 15, you can schedule gifts in advance of Big Day of Giving using the “Schedule Your Gift” function of the website. Please note that scheduled gifts will not be processed on your credit card until Big Day of Giving May 2, 2019.

What fees are assessed on Big Day of Giving gifts?

Each transaction through the Big Day of Giving website includes a 5.2% fee. The fee is broken down as follows:

CiviCore technology provider processing fee (2.6%): This portion goes to the technology provider, CiviCore, which is responsible for hosting the site, preventing fraud, and ensuring a positive user experience.

Credit card processing fee (2.1%): This portion covers the credit card processing provided by Stripe.

Management fee (0.5%): This portion helps the Foundation offset the costs associated with event management, reconciliation of gifts, and check processing.

Donors can choose to offset these fees during checkout.

One of the most exciting things about Big Day of Giving is that donors can boost their gifts by helping their favorite nonprofits win prizes and by giving to organizations that have secured matching funds (view the Leaderboard to see the nonprofits with matching funds when Big Day of Giving nears). Matching gifts and prizes are not subject to transaction fees.

Can I give to multiple organizations?

Yes, you can add as many donations as you'd like to your “Donation Cart” and only enter your credit card information once. Simply click the "Add More Nonprofits" button to continue adding nonprofits to your cart; when you're finished adding donations, click "Checkout.”

Can I give anonymously?

Yes. During the checkout process, you have the option to keep your donation anonymous. If you select that you’d like your donation to be anonymous, the nonprofit you donate to will not receive your name and contact information.

Can I include a note or memorial dedication with my gift?

Yes. During the checkout process, there is a field where you can enter information about whether your gift is in honor/in memory of someone special.

Should I create an account or check out as a "Guest"?

By creating an account, you will be able to access your giving history and resend yourself receipts all year-round! During Big Day of Giving, you may choose to bypass this section of the checkout process, but we encourage you to take advantage of this feature.

If you schedule a gift in advance of Big Day of Giving, you will be required to create an account.

Will I receive a receipt?

Yes! When you give on Big Day of Giving, you will automatically receive an on-screen acknowledgment and an e-mailed receipt for your 100% tax-deductible donation.

If you schedule a gift in advance of Big Day of Giving, you will immediately receive an emailed acknowledgement of the scheduled gift. When the gift processes on May 2, you will receive an emailed receipt.

I scheduled a donation before May 2. When will my credit card be charged?

Thank you for scheduling a donation! Scheduled donations will process on May 2 during the first few hours of the event. Once your scheduled gift is processed, you will receive an emailed tax receipt. If you need to edit or remove your scheduled gift, you may do so by using your login information that you created when scheduling your gift.

What else should I know?

Secure donations for Big Day of Giving are provided through the technology platform, CiviCore, to each donor entering their own credit card information directly on www.bigdayofgiving.org.

Any third party who enters credit card information on behalf of a donor, by their actions of entering any such credit card information on behalf of a donor, has signified their donor's agreement with the Big Day of Giving sponsoring organizations a) to assume all risk of loss and any liability associated with such transaction and b) to indemnify each of the sponsoring organizations of the Big Day of Giving against any and all risk of loss and any liability associated with such transaction.



How can my gifts help nonprofits win prizes?

Donations received during the 24-hour period (12 a.m. PST to 11:59 p.m. on May 2, 2019) at www.bigdayofgiving.org are eligible for prizes.

By making a donation with your credit card to an organization on May 2, you help nonprofits compete for over $100,000 in Big Day of Giving prizes. For a full list of challenges and prize rules, visit the Prizes page.

Keep in mind that, for purposes of awarding prizes, multiple donations from one donor to the same nonprofit will only count as a single gift.

Are prizes subject to fees?

No, prize winnings are not subject to any transaction fees.

What does the "Reviewed by Community Foundation" icon on the profiles mean?

When an organization completes a GivingEdge profile, the information is reviewed for accuracy by the Sacramento Region Community Foundation. If a profile shows a "reviewed" icon, it means that it has passed our review process and the information is current. Nonprofits are required to update their profiles annually in order to keep their "reviewed" status.  

The reviewed icon is not an endorsement or accreditation of a nonprofit. Big Day of Giving and the Sacramento Region Community Foundation cannot guarantee the accuracy of data provided by the nonprofit or guarantee they are in compliance with all state and federal requirements. However, we seek to include the most accurate data available through document verification and a due diligence process to verify their exempt status as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization.
