Organization Details

Only 23% of Sacramento County children are considered physically fit and almost 30% of children are considered overweight or obese. Between 40-80% of overweight children will become overweight adults. As a direct result of the obesity epidemic, doctors are seeing a significant rise in chronic illness in children. Not only is childhood obesity a huge issue that needs to be addressed, but physical inactivity is a serious problem. Health-risk behaviors such as substance use, violence, and physical inactivity are consistently linked to academic failure and often affect students' attendance, grades, test scores, and ability to pay attention.

R4R's Youth Fitness Program is in alignment with the vision of the California Obesity Plan: 'Californians will understand the importance of physical activity and healthy eating, and they will make healthier choices based on their understanding.' We hope to expand the Youth Fitness Program to more schools, gaining greater outreach to those populations at highest risk for obesity and inactivity in the Sacramento region.
Program Successes
- To date, we have raised and spent $846,000 in the program, allowing more than 32,000 students in more than 780 Greater Sacramento Area schools to participate.
- The program is led by school representatives and served by Runnin' for Rhett volunteers called Rhett Reps each week.
Since 2005, Runnin' for Rhett has provided physical and nutritional training to over 2,000 Sacramento region adults. The BLUE CREW training allows members to pick and choose from nearly 20 workouts per week, including three coached track sessions. The training prepares individuals for targeted 5Ks, 10Ks, half and full marathon races as well as duathlon, triathlon, obstacle courses, and trail races up to ultra marathon distances. The organization has learned that its most passionate volunteers have come from these training programs, as participants have attributed the people and programs with changing their lives for the better, helping them MOVE INTO LIFE.
Program Successes
Our training programs continue to grow. Originally one group meeting in the Sacramento area, R4R's Blue Crew now meets at locations all over the region, including Elk Grove, Sacramento, Folsom, and Auburn for trail running. We've received countless testimonials about the effectiveness of our adult training programs.

"I don't know if you ever realized how much you or Rhett would touch the lives of so many and make such an impact, but it should be very clear now!" - Angie Westberg

"This was truly one of the best experiences that I have had. To be able to leave the week behind and get out with a group of people each Saturday morning that were moving into life was just great." - Michael Bos
