Program Successes
- Our central kitchen staff begins work each weekday at 4:00am, preparing about 350 hot lunches for Yolo County seniors.
- About 125 meals are for our congregate diners. Our Congregate Meals are offered at senior/community centers throughout the County to sites in Woodland, West Sacramento, Winters and Davis.
- Many seniors suffer from depression and loneliness and need a reason to leave their homes. Social contact with friends and acquaintances is an important component of the congregate dining experience. Our senior participants look forward to gathering for lunch daily. The opportunity to socialize with peers is as important a part of the program as the meal itself. Seniors are encouraged to contribute what they are able, but our program does not have any expectation of payment from the senior; only if they are able to contribute, and we do not keep accounts.
Description
The Home Delivered Meals Program offers temporary or long term service to those 60 years and older, who through illness or recent hospitalization, or just advancing age, cannot prepare nutritious meals for themselves and do not have friends, relatives or paid help to provide assistance. Volunteer drivers deliver the meals to clients on a regular schedule between 11:00 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., weekdays. A shelf stable or frozen meal is offered for ten legal holidays when we are closed.

Program Successes
- The traditional vision of a Meals on Wheels program has always been one of personal delivery of meals and human warmth and connection, and, we are proud to say that our organization still offers that experience for our clients.
- Familiar volunteers deliver a daily, hot, made-from-scratch meal, have a short chat and provide a safety check at each home they visit.
- In many cases, we are the sole support system that allows a senior to remain living independently in their own home for as long as they want to do that.
Description
Our newest project - begun in May 2015 - provides for a bag of healthy, shelf stable groceries to be delivered to 150 of our neediest home delivery clients for the last weekend of each month. We know that they often have 'run out of money before they have run out of month'... waiting for their Social Security check or pension to deposit on the first of each month, they often don't have enough money left for groceries to get them through that last weekend of the month. In the past, our folks often had to choose between buying groceries or other necessities at the end of the month; now, they know that they will receive these all-important groceries. We are very gratified that this program has been accepted so wholeheartedly by our seniors, by our staff and by those in the community who donate funds and/or volunteer to help pack bags.

Program Successes
- We hear quite often from our seniors and their family members, that this program is making a huge difference, and they look forward to the last weekend of the month now, rather than dreading it.
