In 1987, a small group of families—each impacted by suicide loss—came together with a shared vision: to create lasting support for research, education, and prevention. From that vision, AFSP was born.

At the time, there was no national organization dedicated to understanding and preventing suicide. Today, AFSP is the leading suicide prevention organization in the United States, with chapters in all 50 states and a powerful network of advocates, researchers, and community members working to save lives.

AFSP is dedicated to creating a culture that’s smart about mental health by:

• Funding groundbreaking research by remaining the #1 Private Funder of Suicide Prevention in the nation
• Providing FREE education and prevention programs
• Advocating for lifesaving public policy both locally and nationally
• Supporting those affected by suicide and survivors of suicide loss through programs, connection, and healing

Through efforts like the Out of the Darkness Walks, AFSP brings people together to honor loved ones, support one another, and take action. Every dollar raised helps fund critical research, expand education programs, and provide resources to those who need them most.
