Every day, families in Sacramento County walk into civil courtrooms without legal representation, without guidance, and without the support they need to navigate a system that is confusing, overwhelming, and often unforgiving. The Henley & Harris Foundation created the Access to Justice Empowerment Project to change that reality. Our mission is simple but powerful: to ensure that no family has to face the civil court system alone.

For many low‑income families, the barriers begin long before they ever step into a courtroom. They struggle to understand court notices, deadlines, and required forms. They lack transportation, childcare, or the ability to take time off work. They are intimidated by legal language and procedural rules that even trained professionals find difficult. These challenges create a cycle of missed hearings, dismissed cases, and lost rights — not because families don’t care, but because the system is not built for them.

The Access to Justice Empowerment Project provides hands‑on, step‑by‑step support to families who are representing themselves. We help them understand their case, prepare their documents, organize evidence, meet deadlines, and communicate effectively with the court. We offer trauma‑informed guidance that respects each person’s dignity and lived experience. Our goal is not to replace attorneys — it is to ensure that families have the tools, clarity, and confidence they need to advocate for themselves.

Your support allows us to expand this critical work. With your help, we can provide court‑ready document packets, mobile legal navigation clinics, and direct client support for families who would otherwise be left behind. Many of the individuals we serve are facing housing instability, financial hardship, or family crises. A single missed form or misunderstood instruction can change the entire outcome of their case. Your contribution helps prevent that.

Our mobile clinics bring assistance directly into the community — to neighborhoods, shelters, community centers, and locations where families already receive services. These clinics eliminate transportation barriers and allow us to meet people where they are. We provide on‑site document preparation, deadline tracking, and case navigation support. For many families, this is the first time anyone has taken the time to explain the process in a way that feels human, accessible, and empowering.

We also prepare detailed, organized court packets that include forms, exhibits, timelines, and declarations. These packets help families present their cases clearly and professionally. Something as simple as a well‑organized binder can make a meaningful difference in how a judge understands a case. Your donation helps cover printing, supplies, and the time required to assemble these materials.

In addition, we invest in technology that allows families to complete filings, store documents securely, and communicate with the court. Many clients do not have access to printers, scanners, or reliable internet. Your support helps bridge that gap and ensures that technology is not a barrier to justice.

Every dollar you give directly strengthens a family’s ability to navigate the civil court system with dignity. Your contribution is not just a donation — it is an act of empowerment. It tells families, “You are not alone. Your voice matters. Your case matters.”

Together, we can build a community where justice is accessible, understandable, and achievable for everyone. Thank you for standing with us and supporting the Henley & Harris Foundation’s Access to Justice Empowerment Project.
