Purple Paws for Peace provides safe, temporary crisis‑response housing for the pets of individuals fleeing domestic violence. When survivors make the courageous decision to leave an abusive situation, many face an impossible barrier: most domestic violence shelters cannot accommodate animals. For nearly half of survivors, fear for a pet’s safety becomes a reason to delay or avoid leaving altogether.
We remove that barrier.
By partnering with domestic violence agencies, crisis‑response teams, law enforcement, and community organizations, Purple Paws for Peace ensures survivors never have to choose between their own safety and the safety of their beloved animals. We provide emergency intake, safe housing, essential supplies, and coordinated support so survivors can enter shelter, stabilize, and begin healing — knowing their pets are cared for and protected.
Our work strengthens the entire domestic violence response system. When pets are safely housed, survivors can access shelter faster, stay longer, and engage more fully in services. We help DV agencies expand their capacity, reduce barriers, and support survivors holistically.

We partner with domestic violence agencies and crisis‑response networks to remove barriers, support healing, and keep families together.
To date, Purple Paws for Peace is a small, confidential, crisis‑response nonprofit meeting a very large critical need in the domestic violence ecosystem: safe, temporary housing for the pets of survivors fleeing abuse. As demand grows, our ability to respond quickly depends on sustainable funding and community support. Our most urgent needs include:
• Crisis‑Response Pet Boarding Funds
We rely on local boarding partners to house pets during DV emergencies. Costs range from $25–$60 per day per animal, and many survivors need 2–6 weeks of care. Funding ensures that no survivor is turned away due to cost. Survivors are not charged for any of our services.
• Emergency Intake Supplies
Each crisis intake requires food, crates, bedding, medical supplies, flea/tick prevention, and comfort items. These supplies allow us to respond immediately when a DV agency calls for help.
• Veterinary Care Assistance
Many pets arrive with untreated medical needs due to the conditions of the abusive environment. Donations help us provide exams, vaccines, medications, and urgent care so pets can remain safe and healthy during their stay.
• Transportation Support
We often coordinate emergency transport of pets to safe housing. Funding helps cover mileage, fuel, and urgent transport needs when survivors must flee quickly.
• Capacity Building & Partnerships
As more DV agencies learn about PPP, requests increase. Support helps us expand partnerships, strengthen crisis‑response coordination, and ensure survivors across Placer and Sacramento counties have access to safe pet housing.
• General Operating Support
As a young nonprofit, flexible funding allows us to maintain essential infrastructure, respond to emergencies, and grow sustainably while meeting the needs of survivors and their pets.
