Conditions For Learning

     I am excited to introduce you to Conditions For Learning (CFL), a non-profit educational support provider that equips teachers to create engaging, responsive, inspiring classrooms. We are defining what teachers should know and be able to do to support students in high-needs learning environments. In the process, we are positioning schools as vibrant centers of learning and social change for students, families, and communities in some of the county’s most challenging environments.

     Since 2007, CFL has successfully implemented its program in more than 25 Northern California schools serving at-risk students that include high populations of English Language Learners, minority students, and disabled students. The myriad of teachers who have adopted CFL practices in their classrooms and schools and, as a result, become expert CFL implementers, have made dramatic strides in improving teacher retention rates, student attendance and student academic scores. Our work continues to create effective educators and empowered students in communities.

     Key to CFL’s strategy is establishing a handful of ‘laboratory’ schools that partner with CFL to develop, test, measure and refine CFL’s strategies. While these schools help to fund CFL costs, their contributions are insufficient to cover the broader scope of CFL’s work.  Based on its ‘laboratory’ school work, CFL then creates tools, resources and instructional materials that are digitally shared with a growing cadre of teachers working to build more effective classrooms in high-need, high-risk educational settings.  

     Funding will enable CFL to cover not only essential operating costs such as staff salaries, technology upgrades, program materials, and administrative expenses, but also development of open-source instructional resources that are used by teachers across the country. By providing general operating support,  you can help ensure that CFL’s pioneering methodologies and approach will reach more teachers and improve learning outcomes for students who are not being effectively equipped to reach their full potential  in lower-performing, low-income schools in Northern California and nationwide.

Conditions for Learning’s Innovative Approach

      CFL founder Jason Knighton has been working directly in urban classrooms for 32 years. Using this classroom experience, he developed the CFL program, which has been catalytic in transforming the experiences of teachers and students in Northern California schools.  At their core, CFL’s  programs focus on improving academic achievement, enhancing social-emotional skills, and empowering students through mentorship opportunities. The pillars of CFL’s approach include:

• Engaging instruction that helps educators create effective classroom environments as measured by academic and school climate data,

• Responsive classroom design that guides teachers in developing formative assessment practices and enables differentiated structures to support students at every level, and  

• Inspiring curriculum plans that train teachers to create a project-based and service-learning curriculum for student projects

     By addressing the unique challenges faced by both teachers and students in these schools, we aim to break the cycle of poverty and create a brighter future for our communities. By open sourcing access to CFL methodologies and placing them in the hands of more teachers and aspiring teachers, we seek to ensure that every community - no matter their level of resources or challenges - has a clear pathway to its schools as a vibrant center of learning and social change.
