The Sacramento LGBT Community Center, originally incorporated as a unique assistance program known as The Lambda Community Fund, was founded in 1978 - nine years after the Stonewall Riots- to serve the Sacramento region's Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer community. In its first thirty years, the Center operated almost entirely on the generosity of community volunteers who offered those in need of assistance and a place to find community. 

Despite our community achieving greater acceptance and legal rights over the last decade, the visibility of societal disparities that still exist highlighted significant needs. The Center developed more robust programs and services to meet these needs, hired professional staff, and engaged considerable public and private funding to support the community. Today, the Sacramento LGBT Community Center has become one of the region's largest nonprofits, reaching more LGBTQ+ people than any organization in Northern California. 

We believe that all LGBTQ+ people deserve responsive and dignified treatment, equitable access to health and wellness, economic justice, Pride, and a sense of belonging. We are a lean, efficient organization, achieving GuideStar's Platinum Seal of Transparency.


Mission

The Sacramento LGBT Community Center works to create a region where all LGBTQ+ people thrive; we support health and wellness, advocate for equity and justice, and work to uplift our diverse and culturally rich LGBTQ+ community.

Needs

Donations are the lifeblood of our Center, making possible the life-sustaining and life-saving services that countless individuals rely on. Historically, these gifts were our sole financial support, and though government grants now form our primary funding source—accounting for almost 60%—they fall short of covering all our needs. Some of our most crucial programs receive no government support at all. This year, we aim to raise approximately $2.65 million in private donations to maintain and enhance our diverse programs and services, complemented by an additional $3.12 million from government grants and program fees.

EMPOWERING HEALTH & WELLNESS

• Comprehensive Health Initiatives: We continue to fight against STI and HIV through proactive testing and care linkage. Your support helps us ensure that every individual who tests positive receives the care they need.

• Mental Health Support: We provide ongoing clinical therapy and support groups, helping to reduce isolation and improve mental health among our community members.

FOSTERING INDEPENDENCE & STABILITY

• Youth Housing and Homelessness Services: Our housing services are vital for unhoused youth, providing not just shelter but a pathway to independence through education and job assistance.

• Economic Empowerment: Through our Economic Justice Program, we offer workforce development and employer training, crucial for creating affirming workplaces and reducing economic disparities.

BUILDING COMMUNITY & ADVOCACY

• Cultural Engagement: Events like Sacramento Pride and Transgender Day of Visibility, which celebrate diversity and foster a strong sense of community, are only possible with your help. We are one of the few nonprofit LGBTQ+ Community Centers that manage and execute local Pride marches and festivals.

• Legal and Educational Advocacy: We train schools, healthcare facilities, and businesses in cultural humility, ensuring that our community is respected and understood.
