In 2003, several businessmen, professional educators, and music lovers who desired to make symphonic music a significant and immediate cultural element of our community, began to explore the creation of a locally based orchestra. The symphony was envisioned to be both an opportunity to hear high-quality live symphonic music and to be a means for musicians and music teachers to perform great symphonic literature. The Founding Board and subsequent Board members shared the viewpoint that music is not just an enjoyable past time; it can also bring together diverse groups of people and strengthen the community. The success of the symphony, now completing its 20th season and over 70 musicians strong, is a tribute to the efforts of individuals with a passion to bring live music to the Folsom Lake Region.
The Folsom Lake Symphony presents a wide range of orchestra literature through its ten performances each season and offers a variety of community enrichment programs for the young and young at heart, including:
•An annual opportunity for families to attend a fun and educational classical performance and participate in a children's instrument "petting zoo."
•An annual Young Artist Competition to give our talented young musicians in our community a forum to develop, compete and showcase their talent.
•School performances by symphony musicians and guest artists to help augment important arts education that has been lost due to budget cuts.
•Senior community engagement efforts, including in-residence ensemble performances, craft activities to symphony music and senior resident sponsorships to attend concerts.
•Two free outdoor concerts for the residents of the Folsom Lake community.
The Folsom Lake Symphony is proud to serve as the premier orchestra for Folsom and its surrounding communities, as well as the resident orchestra at the Harris Center for the Arts. The symphony is a grass-roots organization that thrives on the hard work of its volunteers and the generous donations from its patrons. Except for the conductor, concertmaster and some principal musicians, no one involved with the symphony is paid.
The mission of the Folsom Lake Symphony is to inspire and create community through the power of symphonic music.
Funding for general operating expenses and guest artists.
Funding for programs that focus on the children in our community:
- Family Concert and Instrument "Petting Zoo" - The Family Concert is a fun, interactive and educational concert tailored for children. An instrument "petting zoo" follows the concert where children can interact with symphony musicians and try out a variety of instruments.
- Young Artist Competition and Recital - This program allows the youth in our community (ages 8 to 18 years old) to develop and showcase their talent through competition. The winners of the competition perform in recital and the grand prize winner performs with the symphony at the annual Family Concert.
- Music in our Schools program - We bring in small ensembles of symphony musicians into schools to provide educational, interactive and fun performances. We also bring in our guest artists to perform and hold Q & A sessions with high school students.
Funding for our Senior Engagement programs. Programs include bringing small ensembles of musicians to perform at senior and assisted living facilities, providing in-house craft activities with symphony recordings and sponsoring seniors to attend our matinee concerts for free.
Funding for our two free outdoor community outreach concerts (Folsom, El Dorado Hills). These family-oriented concerts are comprised of pops and light classical music to increase access to symphonic music to the general population.
