History and About

Established in 1885 as a public-private partnership with the City of Sacramento, the Crocker Art Museum is the premier (and only) visual arts museum in the greater Sacramento metropolitan area. With works of art spanning six continents and dating from prehistoric times to the present, the Crocker's permanent collection heavily features Californian, European, American, Asian, African, and Oceanic works in all media and styles.

The Museum hosts a full schedule of temporary, traveling, and permanent exhibitions every year in 90,000 square feet of gallery space. Open 3 months each on average, temporary (including traveling) exhibitions feature historic and contemporary artists, diverse subject matter, and a variety of media - bringing new voices and styles to Sacramento.

Accompanying each exhibition as well as standing alone are dozens of public programs, classes, and tours each year. They are designed for all ages, abilities, and backgrounds and provide important context to and engagement with the art objects hanging on the walls. You can hear a classical concert, learn to sketch, or engage in a community dialogue - and more!

By the Numbers:

  • 187,342 annual visitors, specials event attendees, and program participants
  • 2.2 million page views of crockerart.org
  • 12,250 member households
  • 162,000 square foot building featuring a historic wing and a 2010 modern expansion

Mission

The Crocker Art Museum is dedicated to promoting an awareness of and enthusiasm for human experience through art. We measure our success by our ability to enrich the intellectual and cultural life of the communities we serve.

Needs

By making a donation to the Crocker Art Museum on the Big Day of Giving, you help us continue high quality free and low-cost programming for everyone, as we have been doing for decades.

The Crocker is dedicated to providing special programs, outreach efforts, and initiatives to serve especially vulnerable members of our community. Our priority populations include students and teachers throughout our region, and members of communities who have traditionally been underserved and under resourced.

All gifts, large and small, are deeply valued and essential to the Museum's success.
