History and About

Art belongs to everyone. And, at the Crocker Art Museum, every exhibition, class, and creative experience opens doors.

For more than 140 years, the Crocker has been a cornerstone of creativity and connection in our region. As the first public art museum in the West and now one of the leading cultural institutions in Northern California, the Crocker has inspired generations through art, education, and engagement.

Today, the Museum welcomes hundreds of thousands of visitors each year and offers not only a world-class collection, but also one of the most robust arrays of exhibitions, classes, and public programs in the region. From students experiencing their first museum visit, to older adults finding community through creativity, to families finding belonging through art, the Crocker is a place where art is accessible, welcoming, and transformative.

Your gift on Big Day of Giving helps ensure that this vital community resource remains accessible and inspiring for generations to come.

Equity Statement

The Crocker Art Museum is committed to advancing diversity, equity, accessibility, and inclusion (DEAI). We recognize and endeavor to address the historical and complex circumstances of biases and inequities that have impacted society and the Crocker. Through art, we work together as staff, Board, and volunteers to build meaningful relationships with the community we serve, including our members and visitors.

To that end, the artists and stories represented in our collection, exhibitions, publications, and programming must reflect the diversity of the world we live in. We actively and intentionally make decisions and align our resources to provide equitable access to all. Our responsibility is to provide a space that allows for inclusivity and belonging, where everyone thrives and feels valued, respected, and able to bring their whole self. Through a transparent and actionable commitment, we hope to foster new perspectives and innovation that will continue to push the definition of excellence by which we measure ourselves. We support and empower all those around us to do the same.

We acknowledge that our actions require regular examination to cultivate a deeper awareness, appreciation, and understanding of the ever-evolving topic of DEAI.

We acknowledge that the Crocker Art Museum is on the traditional land of the Nisenan people, and the current state of California is the homeland of many tribes. We are honored to be here today.
